I ran across Cookie a while back, and was immediately impressed with his humour, texture and sense of adventure – both in his work and play. He’s done some impressive hikes; such as the Continental Divide and now he’s onto the Swiss Alps. Check out the maps he makes!

As Christopher says it, himself;

The Mountain Label is the design studio of Christopher Bettig, a French / American artist living and working in Los Angeles who focuses on appreciating geometry and natural forms in his works, be it art exhibitions or corporate work. Chris is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art with a BFA degree in painting, but finds himself spending a lot of time developing products, graphics and installations for diverse clientele.

I just stumbled upon a studio visit at The Mountain Label, by Grain Edit – very nice inside look at a very nice looking studio. I wannit.

mono1

Spied many times within the pages of one of my fave magazines; Monocle, Gaku Nakagawa has me a little obsessed with line weight right now.

He makes it look so good – like he uses his vector pen tool as if it were a brush. Mesmerizing.

Gaku can be found at (what looks like a pretty good agency): Dutch Uncle

Born in the temple “Zuisenji”, Kyoto in 1966. He studied Buddhist art at a university and worked as a copywriter after graduation. From 1996 he started to work as illustrator and priest. He works with pamphlet of government and municipal offices and a temple, books, a magazine, etc.

mr sleeep

Mr.Sleeep used to hang out constantly at Café Wim, where I worked many many years ago. He even worked there for a short while.

Drove me nuts when he hung out, drove me more nuts when he worked there. But he always had talent and skills with pens and paper, and knowing music. He’s like a music guru. Wonder what will be super cool next year? – ask him, I bet he knows.

He’s honed his skills even more over the years; his colours and lines are mesmerizing and inspiring. Check him out!
Check out his and his lady-friend’s retro design photostream too. Wicked.

Raymond Biesinger

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

I’ve been eyeing Raymond Biesinger’s ilustrations in Monocle for a while now – nice to see he’s a fellow canuck! Busy guy. Seems he also runs a printing press/publishing house, and is in a rock band.

After surfing through his site, I went straight on through to his ETSY shop and got myself two of his books. Lovely little square jobs filled with battered, weathered and worn black and white goodies.

Adrian Johnson

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

As I started writing this post, and looking through Adrian Johnson’s site, I realized I had already blogged about his work on the “Raise Them On Robinson’s” animated ads, although I had failed then to name him as the artist.

Seems to me, that back then, I couldn’t find out more about who had worked on them other than the ad agency. Isn’t that often the case?

What had sent me to Adrian’s site this time, was his work in Monocle. Again; I had already blogged about him without realizing it, in a post about Monocle. What the hell is wrong with me?

I finally made it to the man himself, and what a treasure his site is.
I might considering dropping white, and adopting eggshell. Sure looks nice.

Beastie Boys’ “To The 5 Boroughs” promo + Michael Gillette blog

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

It’s not even monday – but what the heck.
Old fave Michael Gillette drew every single line of this animated promo for the Beastie Boys’ To the 5 Boroughs album.

As an added bonus – he’s begun blogging again. After discovering his blog in October 2007, and then losing track of it after January 2008, I see it’s been stocked with a bevy of illustrations. Not least his excellent set of James Bond book covers. Man, I have a weakness for Bond covers…

Nice work. Nice tunes.

Crappy Cat!

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

This interactive animated adventure, of a mean tempered, boozy, one-eyed feline, is awesome.

Fantastically thought up, expertly animated, and with a good dose of whacked out humour – I got totally sucked in. Love it.

Lad of the Rings and Suzuki’s Afro

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

I never hesitate to get my hands on free crafty gear, and this past week I had a chance to do it twice. Once from the talented Stuart Kolakovic, and then from the offices of lifetime hero, David Suzuki.

Lad of the Rings
Stuart had apparently had a rough time getting his line of plastic rings to turn out the way he wanted them – and offered to send some of the duds free of charge to anyone who wanted a few.
I did. I wrote; and a few days later- there they were in the daily mail. Not bad really. They are a bit rough around the edges, and not exactly round, but the motifs on them are quite nice.

The printed envelope they came in, along with a card and a pin were extra surprises!

So cool. I won’t wear them, though, might send them to my sister in Canada though – the young one, that is… unless the older one starts kicking and screaming.

Suzuki’s Afro
In an effort to get Canadians to vote for the environment this election, The David Suzuki foundation was giving away these cool badges to the first 100 people to ask for them, and sign up for a newsletter from their new blog: voteenvironment2008.ca. I couldn’t pass up a little piece of memorablia (gotta love that afro)- so I did right away, even though I thought I’d had missed the boat.

Lo and behold- there they were today – right there in a recycled paper envelope, with a newsletter, two more badges than I had counted on, and a little note saying “vote for the environment!”

Turns out I can’t vote – having been away from Canada for more than 5 years… who knew?

So I’ll tell any Canadian listening to do it instead:

Vote for the Environment!
And while you’re at it, why not give a party BESIDES the Conservatives and the Liberals have a go at running the country?

I’ll be showing my support for you environmentally friendly canucks over here in Scandinavia, by wearing these pins wherever I go.
